General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Locate Recreational Activities for Children and Adults
Given recreation department brochure(s),catalogue(s), Internet webpage(s) or other resources and up to 5 scenarios (BH=2, IL=3, IH-A=5) of families looking for recreational activities, student will select an appropriate activity for the needs expressed in each scenario.

Sample scenario: The Jones family is looking for swimming lessons for their daughter Tanya who is 7 and has never had swimming lessons before. The family will be away on vacation from 6/23-7/14 but will be home for the rest of the summer. Which class would be good for Tanya? Write the class number, time, cost, and beginning and ending dates of a class for Tanya.

Task: 2

Description: Inquire About Recreational Activities

Content A (10 items, 20 points possible)
Given a level-appropriate scenario of a family looking for a recreational activity, student will participate in an interaction (either face to face or on the telephone) with the examiner in the role of recreational agency personnel. Student will ask questions about registering for activities for the family member in the scenario. Student will communicate up to 10 utterances (BH=6, IL=8, IH-A=10).

For example:
Greet and introduce self
Give reason for call or visit
Give information as requested such as age of child
Give dates and times needed
Ask about equipment required
Ask about supervision
Ask about cost
Ask how to register
Ask when the office is open
Close conversation

Content B (3 items, 6 points possible)
Student will use clarification techniques as needed in order to comprehend the examiner's answers. Student (IL-A) will take notes on the examiner’s answers if necessary. Student (BH) may take notes or use an examiner pre-prepared aid such as a checklist, if necessary. After the role-play, the examiner will check the student’s comprehension of the information acquired. This can be in done in a variety of ways such as: by asking 3 comprehension questions (BH=1, IL=2, IH-A=3) which student will answer orally or in writing.

Task: 3

Description: Complete Registration Form
Given an agency-created personal history and one of the scenarios from Task 2, student (IL-A) will complete an authentic recreational activity registration form or other appropriate form. Given an agency-created personal history and using one of the scenarios from Task 2, student (BH) will complete an authentic recreational activity registration form or other appropriate form with a reduced number of sections that student needs to complete. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways such as: (1) giving BH the complete form given to IL-A students and highlighting the sections BH students need to fill out (2) giving BH a reduced form which includes only those sections of the authentic application (given to IL-A students) that are assigned to BH students.
