General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Understand Road Signs and Signals
Student will, orally or in writing, identify and demonstrate understanding of 8 signs, signals, and/or warning signs when shown pictures. Information from California Driver Handbook will be used. IL-A will be shown increasingly complex signs applicable to region.

Task: 2

Description: Role Play a Traffic Stop
Student will participate in a role play of a traffic stop in which the student plays the role of a driver, and the examiner plays the role of a police officer.

Content A (8 items, 16 points possible)
Student responds appropriately to officer’s greeting, up to 6 questions or requests (BL=3, BH=4, IL=5, IH-A = 6) from officer and closes conversation appropriately.

Examples:
- Can I see your driver’s license?
- Do you still live at 721 Pine Street?
- I need to see your registration and proof of insurance.
- Do you know why I pulled you over?

Content B (2 points possible)
Student demonstrates appropriate behavior during role play with officer (keep hands on the wheel, stay in car, speak politely).

Content C (2 points possible)
Following the role-play, the student responds to one comprehension question about information provided by officer during role play.

Traffic Citation (up to 8 items, 16 points possible)
Using an authentic traffic citation, student will respond, orally or in writing, to level-appropriate questions (BH=4, IL=6, IH/A=8 )

- What is the court date?-
- What is the case number?
- What are 2 ways a person can respond to the citation?
- What information appears on the Courtesy Notice?
-What may happen if a person does not take appropriate actions as listed on the citation?
