General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Language and Literacy Objectives

Language and literacy objectives with an asterisk (*) are suitable for beginning low level students.
1	List local health care agencies and facilities in the community.
2	Develop a list of questions to ask community health care providers.
4	*Describe symptoms of an illness using body-part identification nouns and descriptive adjectives.
6	Complete a medical health history form.
10	*Explain medicine labels and medical warning labels.

Task: 1 Description: Chart - Student will make a chart showing 5 local health care centers and give information about them such as their location, phone number, and areas of specialty. Task: 2 Description: Medicine labels - Working from a worksheet with pictures showing 6 medicine labels (3 prescription and 3 non-prescription), student will write under each picture “prescription” or "non-prescription." In a lavel appropriate sentence, students will also answer 6 level appropriate questions (one for each label). e.g. What are the directions for taking this medicine? Does the medicine have an expiration date? If yes, what is it, and what do you do when the medicine expires? Task: 3 Description: Medical History Form - Student will complete a medical history form. Task: 4 Description: Classroom Assignments - Student will select 2 completed classroom assignments to include in the portfolio. Student will determine criteria for choosing the assignments; e.g., his/her best work, work that shows most improvement, represents greatest learning, etc... Student will briefly explain orally or in writing why the assignments were chosen. Task: 5 Description: Reflection - Student will respond to a checklist or questionaire in which he/she reflects on the process of developing the portfolio. Task: 6 Description: Response to Speaker - Having listened to a speaker give a presentation on health care services, students will provide written response to 4 pre-determined questions that were asked of the speaker (e.g. identifying healthy and unhealthy lifestyles).
