General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Compare Different Types of Medical Insurance Coverage
Given resources such as different health plan brochures, descriptions of health plan packages or the Internet, student will complete a chart comparing 2 different types of medical insurance coverage such as HMO and PPO or 2 specific insurance plans. In the chart, student will list level-appropriate elements of comparative information assigned by the examiner, such as the cost, extent of coverage, advantages and disadvantages of each type of coverage.

Task: 2

Description: Ask about Medical Insurance Plans

Content A (8 items, 16 points possible)
Given level-appropriate information on 2 medical insurance plans, a scenario and an agency-created personal/family medical history, student will participate in a role-play with examiner in the role of a Human Resources representative to ask about the 2 plans. Student will have up to 8 interactions (IL=6, IH=7, A=8), such as:
1. Offer a greeting and introduce self
2. Give reason for visiting with HR rep
3-7. Ask questions (IL=3, IH=4, A= 5)) about the 2 different plans such as: "I have a spouse and 3 children, what would I pay for each of these plans?" "I am pregnant. What is the coverage for obstetric care and delivery under both plans?"
8. Close the conversation

Content B (3 items, 6 points possible)
Student will use clarification techniques as needed in order to comprehend the examiner's answers. Student (IL-A) will take notes on the examiner’s answers if necessary. After the role-play, the examiner will check the student’s comprehension of the information acquired. This can be in done in a variety of ways such as: by asking 3 comprehension questions (IL=2, IH-A=3) which students will answer orally.
