General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. 1 *Identify and interpret traffic lights and signals.

6 *Identify basic car parts for the purpose of reporting accidents.
9 *Locate the nearest DMV and list the services the DMV provides.
10 Read and interpret written citations related to traffic or vehicle violations.
11 Prepare a list of questions for a guest speaker (CHP or police officer) on topics such as traffic regulations, safe driving, road signs, child safety seats or seat belts. Participate in the discussion by asking questions of the speaker and taking notes.

Task: 1

Description: Find Information on the DMV
Given resources such as the DMV Drivers’ Manual and pertinent print and online resources, student (IL-A) will complete a chart showing information about local DMVs, such as locations, services, appointment hours, fees, etc. BL-BH will be given simplified resources and will be required to complete fewer items in the chart.

Task: 3

Description: Ask Questions and Respond to a Speaker

Questions (5 items, 10 points possible)
Student will write up to 5 questions (IL=4, IH-A=5) to ask of a speaker (e.g., police officer or CHP officer) who will discuss topics such as traffic regulations, safe driving, road signs, child safety seats or seat belts.

Answers (5 items, 10 points possible)
After listening to the speaker respond to student questions, student will use the information learned from the speaker to write answers to up to 5 level-appropriate questions (IL=4, IH-A=5). (Answers may be based on student’s or any classmates questions.)

Task: 4

Description: Read and Respond to a Traffic Citation

Traffic Citation (BH-A) (5 items, 10 points possible)
Given an authentic traffic citation, student will respond, orally or in writing, to up to 5 level-appropriate questions (BH=3, IL=4, (IH-A=5), such as:

- What is the violation?
- What is the violation code?
- Why was the traffic citation given?
- What are 2 ways a person can respond to the citation?

Traffic Court (IL-A) (5 items, 10 points possible)
Given resources such as county traffic court Web site, traffic citation, fact sheet, etc., student will respond to 5 level-appropriate questions about attending traffic school to resolve the traffic violation in Content A such as:

- If you want to request traffic school, where and when must you appear?
- Who is eligible to attend traffic school?
- If a person gets ticket such as the one above and goes to traffic school, how much will he pay in total for the citation, administrative fees and traffic school fees?
- What are the advantages of going to traffic school rather than paying the citation alone?

Task: 6

Description: Reflect on Learning
Student will answer 3 questions (or complete a checklist or questionnaire) reflecting on student's increased ability to access and use the DMV and read, interpret, and identify legal response to regulations, roadside signs, and traffic signals based on what student has learned (3 simple questions requiring short oral or written answers for BL-BH and more complex questions requiring longer written responses for IL-A).
