General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 2

Description: Write a Note to Remind a Person to Vote
Student will write a note or draft an e-mail to a friend or relative reminding that person to vote. The note will include 3 reasons why it is important to vote.

Example: I hope you will vote on Tuesday. Voting is a right and a duty of citizenship. Citizens need to vote to have their opinions heard. Participating in voting helps keep democracy strong.

Task: 3

Description: Write a Letter to the Editor on a Political Issue
After conducting research using level-appropriate resources, student will complete an authentic writing task such as a letter or email to the editor communicating student's opinion on a current political issue on the local, state or federal level. Student will include 5 elements, such as (1) introduce and state the issue, (2) give background information about the issue, (3) state student’s opinion on the issue, (4) give 2 detailed examples to support student's opinion, and (5) conclude the letter with a summary statement.
