The National External Diploma Program: Laying the Foundation for the Future

Since CASAS acquired the rights to the NEDP, the program has been undergoing significant revisions designed to meet new assessment guidelines and increasingly more rigorous high school completion standards. This session will provide an overview of the progress to date and will explore plans for further development. Topics include: 1) completion of the competency revalidation process, 2) a strategy for developing and validating performance indicators, 30 plans for redesigning tasks, plans for using eTests in diagnostics, and 4) piloting an electronic NEDP portfolio system. Participants will also learn how they can become actively involved in working collaboratively to strengthen the NEDP. Presenter: Patricia Rickard, CASAS

Redesigning Performance Indicators and Tasks for the National External Diploma Program

Now that a national process for revalidating the NEDP competencies has been completed, a next stop in preparation for redesigning tasks is to review the existing performance indicators, make modifications, where necessary, and to design and validate new ones to accompany the newly validated competencies. Draft performance indicators developed to date will be presented for selected competency areas for participant discussion. This session will also present plans for designing a template that provides detailed specifications to guide the task redevelopment process. Participants will learn how they can assist in these developmental efforts. Presenter: Jim Harrison, CASAS

NEDP participant characteristics and skill levels: recent studies and developments

Nationally, education providers have responded to increasing demand from many constituencies for more information that better describes students and education programs. Consistent with that trend, CASAS is collecting data on NEDP participants to better answer questions about our student population and program effectiveness. Topics that will be discussed include the Yearly Statistical Report, and data from a study of NEDP participants’ reading and math basic skill levels. Lastly, the presenter will share a software program currently in development designed to make participant-level data collection more accurate, less paper-intensive, and uniform across all NEDP programs. Presenter: Andrew Evans, CASAS
