General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Language and Literacy Objectives

Language and literacy objectives with an asterisk (*) are suitable for beginning low level students.

Additional Assessment Plan Tasks

Task: 1

Description: All students look at a picture of a house in need of 7 repairs.

Beginning Low to Beginning High students fill out a 10-item checklist, indicating which repairs on the checklist are needed and which are not.

Intermediate Low to Advanced students list the 7 problems they see in the picture and also make a list of 3 items in the picture that do not need repair.

Task: 2

Description: Choosing two items from task 1, students write a letter to the landlord requesting the repairs needed.

Format: the letter will contain all of the following elements of proper letter format: 1) letter is properly dated; 2) writer's name and address are complete, and appear in the proper place; 3) recipient's name and address are complete and appear in the proper place; 4) letter opens with a proper salutation; 5) letter closes with a proper salutation

Content: The letter will contain the following 5 elements of content: elements 1-2) two needed repairs correctly identified; 3) letter begins with proper self-introduction; 4) letter begins with an appropriate reason for writing; 5) letter closes with a proper salutation

Task: 3

Description: Role Play

Beginning Low to Beginning High students role play a simple call to a landlord to request one of the repairs identified in Task 1.

The Beginning Low to Beginning High student will: 1) identify him or herself; 2) state his or her address; 3) request the needed repair; 4) end with an appropriate closing.

Intermediate Low to Advanced students will role play a call to a fair housing agency to report a suspected case of housing discrimination.

The Intermediate Low to Advanced student will: 1) use appropriate greeting and identify him or herself; 2) explain the suspected incident of discrimination based on a reading; 3) 1eave contact information so the agency can get in touch with him or her again; 4) close with an appropriate salutation
