General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Demonstrate understanding of Road Signs and Signals
Student will identify and demonstrate understanding of 8 signs, signals, and/or warning signs when shown pictures. Information from California Driver Handbook will be used. IL-A will be shown increasingly complex signs applicable to region.

Task: 2

Description: Role Play a Traffic Stop
The student will participate in a role play of a traffic stop in which the student plays the role of a driver, and the examiner plays the role of a police officer. Appropriate driving documents will be provided.
Content A (8 items, 16 points possible)
Student responds appropriately to officer’s greeting, responds to up to 6 questions or requests (BL=3, BH=4, IL=5, IH-A=6) from officer, and concludes conversation appropriately.
Examples:
• I need to see your drivers’ license.
• Is this your current address?
• Do you know why I pulled you over?
Content B (2 points possible)
Student demonstrates appropriate behaviors based on DMV guidelines on how to act when stopped by a police officer (keep hands on wheel as officer approaches, stay in car, speak politely.)
Content C (2 points possible)
Following the role-play, the student will respond to one comprehension question about the information presented in the role play.

Description: Read and Interpret a Traffic Citation (BH-A) 16 points possible)

Using an authentic traffic citation, the student will respond orally or in writing to questions (BH=4, IL=6, (IH-A=8) about the information presented on the citation.
Example questions:
- What is the violation?
- What is the case number?
- When is the court date?
- What are 2 ways a person can respond to the citation?
