General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Language and Literacy Objectives

Language and literacy objectives with an asterisk (*) are suitable for beginning low level students.
1 List local health care agencies and facilities in the community.
2 Develop a list of questions to ask community health care providers.
3 Contact health care agencies/providers to ask questions, to invite a speaker, or arrange a field trip.
4 *Describe symptoms of an illness using body-part identification nouns and descriptive adjectives.
5 *Perform actions in response to a physician’s directions/instructions in a role-play.
10 *Explain medicine labels and medical warning labels.
12 *Make medical appointments and transfer appointment information onto a calendar.
15 *Identify the difference between prescription and non-prescription medicines.

Additional Assessment Plan Tasks

Task: 1

Description: Description: Role play: The student will be presented with an “ailment card” depicting an illness or injury, and will call a doctor’s office to schedule an appointment regarding the problem. The examiner will play the role of the receptionist and will follow a script to provide the conversation prompts. The student will 1) offer greeting and state name ; 2) request an appointment; 3) state the nature of the illness (based on the “ailment card” provided to student) 4) spell last name upon request, 5) provide telephone number upon request; 6) agree to or negotiate ( IL-A) suggested appointment; 7) clarify and/or confirm date and time of appointment; 8) end call appropriately. (16 total pts possible)Content B:Students will write the appointment date and time on a calendar. (2 pts)

Task: 2

Description: Observation(TPR): The student will respond to 5 (1 pt ea) commands from a health care professional. Instructions may include: roll up your sleeve, make a fist, look up/ look down, take a deep breath and hold it, open your mouth and say “ah”, cover your right eye with your hand, etc. Instructions will increase in complexity according to level.

Task: 3

Description: Role-play: The student will participate in a simulation of a consultation with a doctor about the ailment/injury assigned in task one. The assessor will take the part of the physician or physician’s assistant and will follow a script to provide the conversation prompts. The student will greet the doctor appropriately (2 pts), respond to 5 (2 pts ea) questions about the ailment/injury, and conclude the conversation with an appropriate expression of appreciation(2 pts).

Task: 4
