Language and Literacy Objectives

Language and literacy objectives with an asterisk (*) are suitable for beginning low level students.
1 *Identify and demonstrate basic parts and functions of a computer.
2 *Identify, describe and/or demonstrate actions used to use a computer and/or navigate the internet (e.g. computer applications).
3 *Describe and/or demonstrate one’s ability to use a computer, for example in the context of a job interview or job application process.
4 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing.
5 Use technology to communicate, interact and collaborate effectively with others.
7 Demonstrate the ability to write an email using appropriate style, tone, and register.

Additional Assessment Plan Tasks

Task: 1

Description: Respond to Instructions Related to Keyboarding

Following a set of written or oral instructions, student will perform up to eight keyboarding commands (BL=6, BH=8) to demonstrate knowledge of the keyboard and keyboarding vocabulary such as:

1. Undo/redo an action
2. Refresh the active window
3. Copy/Paste the selected item
4. Move up/down one screen
5. Delete the selected item and move to Recycle Bin

Assessor will use an observation checklist to score student’s responses.

Task: 2

Description: Identify and Demonstrate Use of Common Office Software Applications

Content A (BL: 4 points possible; BH: 8 points possible; IL-A: 12)
Using level appropriate descriptions, student will identify and describe in writing 4 common office software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) as follows:

BL:
Identify (1 point per identification) each office software application as illustrated

BH:
Identify (1 point per identification) and describe (1 point per description) the usage of each office software application as illustrated

IL-A:
Identify (1 point per identification), explain (1 point per explanation), and provide an example (1 point per example) of common usage of each office software application in the workplace setting as illustrated.

Content B (IL-A: 15),
Given a level appropriate agency-created scenario, student will complete an authentic writing task using office software applications such as:
1. Create a table or spreadsheet and enter data as specified
2. Name and Save the document
3. Write an email and attach document
4. Include description of attached document
5. Send email to assessor

Description: Write an Email to a Prospective Employer (20 points possible)
Given a level-appropriate prompt, student will write an email to a prospective employer expressing interest in a job opportunity. Student will use appropriate style, tone, register and format.
Student will communicate up to 6 pieces of information (IL=5, IH-A=6) such as:
1. An appropriate greeting
2. Identify self
3. Expression of interest in the job
4. Describe experience or education relating to the job
5. Request an interview
6. An appropriate closing and signature.
Optimally, the writing task will be created on a computer and sent to the assessor electronically.
