General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Language and Literacy Objectives

Language and literacy objectives with an asterisk (*) are suitable for beginning low level students.
1 *Identify and interpret various safety-related signs commonly found in the workplace.
2 Read and interpret basic safety instructions.
3 *Identify, demonstrate and/or explain safe work procedures, common safety equipment and/or IT & social media policies and security rules.
4 *Report unsafe working conditions.
7 *Respond to safety related warnings/signs found in a work environment.

Task: 1

Description: Identify Safe and Unsafe Working Conditions

Working Conditions: (6 items, 12 points possible)
Given a picture or a set of pictures with 6 working conditions-- 3 safe conditions and 3 unsafe conditions, student (BL-A) will identify safe and unsafe working conditions and will explain why the conditions are safe or not.

Solutions: (6 items, 12 points possible)
Student (BH-A) will then suggest 2 solutions for each of the 3 unsafe working conditions.

Task: 2

Description: Report an Unsafe Working Condition (6 items, 12 points possible)
Given a picture prompt depicting an unsafe work condition, student will report an unsafe working condition to assessor in the role of a supervisor. Student will include up to 6 items (BL-BH=4, IL=5, IH-A=6), such as:
• Introduce self and position.
• Describe the unsafe working condition.
• Explain where the unsafe condition is located.
• Describe what might happen if it is not fixed.
• Suggest a solution.
• Close the conversation.
