General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Language and Literacy Objectives

Language and literacy objectives with an asterisk (*) are suitable for beginning low level students.

Task: 1

Description: Identify Jobs and Job Duties
The student will be presented with 5 pictures depicting various occupations and will respond to two questions orally or in writing about each picture, such as:
1: What is the job/occupation?
2. What does this person do? (or What are the job duties/job responsibilities?)

Task: 2

Description: Research Jobs
Given resources such as links to appropriate internet sites such as O*Net OnLine or My Skills My Future, student (IL-A) will research a job of student's choice or one assigned by the assessor and use the information gained by the research to complete a chart with up to 7 items (IL=5, IH=6, A=7) decided upon by the class or the assessor. Chart will include elements such as:

1. Name of job
2. Job description
3. Hourly wage/yearly salary/pay range
4. Education, training, credentials or certificates required
5. Experience required
6. Working conditions
7. Local jobs
8. 5 reasons you want this job

Student (IL-A) will attach to the chart the resources used to obtain the information (e.g., internet page researched).

Given level-appropriate resources such as agency-created job descriptions, student (BL-BH) will complete a chart with up to 4 items (BL=3, BH=4. Chart will include elements such as the ones listed above.

Optimally, the chart will be created on a computer and sent to the assessor electronically.

Task: 3

Description: Present an Oral Report
Content (14 points possible)
After doing level-appropriate research on job of student's choice (See task 2), student will give an oral report on student's findings. The report will be based on the answers to up to 6 questions (BH=4,IL=5, IH-A=6) which relate to the information in the chart in Task 2 such as:

1. What is the job name and description? Are local jobs available?
2. What is the wage or salary?
3. What education, training, credentials or certificates are required?
4. What experience is required?
5. What are the working conditions?
6. Why do you want this job?

Visual Aid (4 points possible)
In class, student will make a relevant, appropriate, legible and neat (if handwritten) visual aide such as a slide presentation, poster, etc., to support the oral report. Optimally student will make the slide presentation accessible (508 compliant)

Presentation (2 points possible)
Student will refer to a relevant visual aid during the oral report. Student will use effective speech and body language throughout the report.
