General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Identify Growth Mindset
Student will view 2 series of pictures (BL) or read 2 level-appropriate agency-created scenarios (BL-BH) about individuals with growth mindset. Student will identify the growth mindset attributes (BL=2, BH=3) embodied by the individual in each series of pictures or scenario in words, phrases or sentences.

Growth Mindset Response: ask for help.
BH Sample Mistake: I wrote the wrong address on the school’s registration form.

Task: 3

Description: Write about Growth Mindset
Given an agency-created scenario describing an individual with a growth mindset, student will write a paragraph(s) describing up to 3 elements of growth mindset (IL=2, IH-A=3) such as: identify the growth mindset characteristics the individual is exhibiting, describe the actions the person is taking which demonstrate the characteristic, identify the impact growth mindset will have on the individual’s potential.

Sample questions for the student:
Which growth mindset characteristics does the person have?
What are some examples of the person’s growth mindset?
How will the person’s growth mindset benefit them?

Optimally, the composition will be written on a computer and shared with the assessor online.

Given a level-appropriate scenario of a friend having difficulty navigating school, work or personal challenges, student, in role of confidant, will participate in a role play in which student offers assessor, in the role of friend in need of help, up to 4 pieces of growth mindset-based advice (IL=3, IH-A=4), such as:

• Describe how a growth mindset will help friend realize his/her potential
• Explain how challenges are opportunities
• Describe how past choices and actions have led to current successes
• Explain how mistakes are opportunities to learn and improve
Presentation (2 items, 2points possible)
Student will be rated on up to 2 proper communication techniques such as adequate speech volume, eye contact, nodding to show listening, etc.
