General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Read and Interpret Medicine Labels
Working from level appropriate materials with pictures showing 6 medicine labels (3 prescription 3 non-prescription) student will:

Content A: (6 points possible)
Label each picture as “prescription or non-prescription”

Content B: (12 points possible)
Answer up to 6 level appropriate questions
(BL=3, BH=4, IL=5, IH-A=6) one for each label.

Sample questions:
When do you take this medicine?
What are the directions for taking this medicine?
Does the medicine have an expiration date?
If yes, what is it, and what do you do when the medicine expires?

Content C: (6 points possible)

Identify appropriate over the counter medications. Based on written instructions, students will indicate the most appropriate over the counter medication and indicate the course of treatment to be taken for up to 3 scenarios (BL 1, BH 2, IL-Adv 3). Students must demonstrate they have considered any 3 of the following factors: allergies, side effects, dosage, unit price, active ingredients.

Task: 2

Description: Send a Message to a Healthcare Provider through a Patient Messaging System
Using agency supplied information (with supporting visuals for BL-BH) student will send a message to a health care provider detailing a health care concern.

Content A
Log into patient portal (2 points possible):

Students will log into a simulated patient messaging system and select an appropriate healthcare provider

Content B (5 items-16 points possible)
Student (BL-A) will send a message to an appropriate health care provider. The message will include 5 elements such as:
- description of the issue
- symptoms
- onset date/length of symptoms
- over the counter treatments taken/tried
- question about further treatment

Student (IL-A) will include 3 additional items in the message such as:
- prescription medications currently taken (type & dosage)
- history of negative interactions with medicines
- Family health history
- ongoing health concerns
- history of hospitalization/surgery
