General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Language and Literacy Objectives

Language and literacy objectives with an asterisk (*) are suitable for beginning low level students.
1 *Identify what constitutes an emergency or disaster, listing examples.
2 Read selections describing past or possible future emergencies. Discuss how people responded/will respond and the role of assistance agencies.
4 Use the Internet, phone book, library, etc. to locate assistance agencies available in the community.
7 *Describe, either orally or in writing, the appropriate steps to take in response to specific types of emergencies.
8 *Sequence pictures depicting the appropriate steps to take in different emergencies.

Additional Assessment Plan Tasks

Task: 1

Description: Students state five types of disasters/emergencies in an oral interview with the assessor.
The assessor will choose the picture of the emergency at random from a group of 10 or more that have been studied. The student will look at the picture and name the emergency.

Task: 3

Description: Content
Student will write a letter to the editor or advice column that tells about an emergency or disaster that they experienced either in their country or the United States. The letter will include 3 aspects such as:
1. Statement describing and explaining the emergency/disaster.
2. Describe the response to the emergency/disaster by the student, and by others involved in the emergency/disaster.
3. Describe what could be done to prepare for a similar emergency/disaster in the future.

Letter will include date, opening, closing and signature.

Students may be given the first line of the letter such as, "Since it is Disaster Preparedness Month, I would like to share my experience with everyone.”
