General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Call About a Rental
Content A (9 items, 18 points possible)
Given a level-appropriate authentic resource such as a For Rent sign (BL-BH) or classified or internet ad (IL-A), student will participate in a level-appropriate role play telephone call with the assessor up to 9 statements/questions such as: introduce self, state the reason for the call, ask 5 questions (BL=2,BH=3, IL=4, IH-A=5), make an appointment to see the rental unit (IL-A) and close the call.
Example questions:

How many bedrooms does it have?
How much is the rent?
IL-A
Who pays the utilities?
Do I need to pay first and last month’s rent?
How much is the cleaning deposit?

Content B (3 items, 6 points possible)
Student will use clarification techniques as needed in order to comprehend the assessor's answers and take notes on them. After the simulation the assessor will check the student’s comprehension of the information acquired. This can be done in a variety of ways such as: by asking 3 comprehension questions (BL=1, BH-IL=2, IH-A=3) which student will answer orally or in writing.

Task: 2

Description: Talk to a Landlord about a Problem
Given a picture clearly demonstrating a housing problem, student in the role of a tenant will, in a level-appropriate role play, try to resolve the housing problem with the assessor in the role of the landlord. Landlord will try to evade fixing the problem one time (IL-A).

Content A (8 items, 16 points possible)
Student will state/ask/respond to 8 items (BL = 5, BH=6, IL-A=8) such as:
1. Introduce self
2. Give address
3. Name problem
4. Ask for repair
5. Respond to landlord's evasion/Insist upon repair. (IL-A)
6. Ask for a date and/or time the problem will be fixed.
7. Ask for clarification of date/time.
8. Close the conversation.

Content B (2 items, 2 points possible)
Student will write down date and time when problem will be fixed and will show it to the assessor at the end of the role play.
