General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Complete a Rental Application Form
Given an agency-created personal and housing history, student (IL-A) will complete an authentic rental application form.

Given an agency-created personal and housing history, student (BL-BH) will fill out an authentic form with a reduced number of sections that student needs to complete. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways such as: (1) giving BL-BH students the complete form given to IL-A students and highlighting the sections BL-BH students need to fill out (2) giving BL-BH students a reduced form which includes only those sections of the authentic application (given to IL-A students) that are assigned to BL-BH students.

Optimally, the application will be completed on a computer or handwritten, signed and scanned to make a digital document and sent to the assessor electronically.

Task: 2

Description: Write a Note about a Housing Problem
Given a level-appropriate scenario or prompt, student (BH) will write an email, text or a note to the landlord about a problem in the rental unit. Student will describe the problem and ask for repair.

Given a level-appropriate scenario or picture prompt, student (BL) will fill in a note form which lists the 6 pieces of information the student must fill in (e.g. date, name of tenant, etc.) BL student will only be evaluated on content.

Information may include:
1. name of landlord
2. name of tenant
3. apartment number
4. state the problem
5. ask for repair
6. signature

Optimally, the writing task will be created on a computer or phone and sent to the assessor electronically.

Task: 3

Description: Write an Email/Letter about a Housing Problem
Given a level-appropriate scenario or prompt, student will write an email or letter to the landlord about a problem in the rental unit. Student will describe the problem, tell how long the problem has been going on, and explain how and when the problem can be fixed to her/his satisfaction.
