General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Language and Literacy Objectives

Language and literacy objectives with an asterisk (*) are suitable for beginning low level students.

7 Identify characteristics of good quality childcare.

Description: List Characteristics of Good Quality Childcare
Student will list up to 8 characteristics (BH=6, IL=7, IH-A=8) of a good quality childcare center or preschool. (For example: The center has both indoor and outdoor play; It is clean and safe, etc.).

Task: 2

Description: Evaluate a Childcare Facility
After visiting a childcare center or preschool, or viewing a video or pictures of one, student will use either a standardized checklist or a checklist previously created by the class to answer up to 10 questions (BH=6, IL=8, IH-A=10) about the quality of the child care. Student will explain and/or give examples of why student answered “yes” or “no” to questions which require a yes or no answer.

Examples of checklist questions and responses:
• Do the caregivers supervise the children constantly? Yes, there is an adult with each table of children, one supervising the floor area, one in the play house, and two adults outside (A).
• Is there enough space for the number of children? No, there are 10 children in the playhouse area. They are fighting. An adult should send 5 children to different play areas (IH).
• Are there enough caregivers for the number of children? Yes, 20 children and 4 adults (BH).


Optimally, the writing task will be created on a computer and sent to the assessor electronically.
