General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Order a Prescription Refill Using an Automated System
Given an agency-created scenario and prescription label, student will refill a prescription by listening to an authentic or simulated taped pharmacy voicemail script that gives directions for re-ordering a prescription. Student will demonstrate understanding of 6 directions and the ability to respond appropriately by, for example, punching in the correct numbers/symbols into a real (disconnected) or simulated telephone. Assessor will watch the student’s actions and complete a checklist to record the responses.

    Sample Directions:
  • Enter your medical/prescription ID number. Press the pound key after each entry.
  • Enter your telephone number now.
  • Enter the number of the prescription now.
  • Enter the date you wish to pick up the prescription now.
  • Enter your credit card number if you wish to have the prescription mailed to you.
  • Enter 1 if you wish to order another refill now. Enter 2 if you do not wish to order another refill now.

Task: 2

Description: Read and Chart Medication Information
Given a level-appropriate number of medicine labels (e.g. BL=2, BH=3, IL=4)) or prescription inserts or adapted inserts for a level-appropriate number of medications (eg. IH-A=4), student will complete a chart showing information about each medication when given level-appropriate categories to use.

Sample Categories for BL-IL:
  • Prescription number
  • Expiration date
  • Doctor’s name and/or phone number
  • Dosage amount
  • Number of refills

    Given level-appropriate resources, such as the internet, student will complete a chart which includes the names of a level-appropriate number of pharmacies in the area (e.g.BL=2, BH=3, IL=4, IH-A=5) with level- appropriate categories of information about them assigned by the assessor, such as: address, phone number, hours, type of insurance they accept, and translation services.

    Optimally, the chart will be created on a computer and sent to the assessor electronically.
