General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Respond to Emergencies
In response to 2 specific emergency situations, student will appropriately sequence 3 pictures of the steps to take in case of each emergency and will describe the appropriate steps depicted in words or phrases. Assessor observes and records responses on a checklist.

Task: 2

Description: List Crime Prevention Methods
Student will create a list for a public venue (such as a newsletter article or bulletin board) of 2 effective methods (BL=1, BH =2), for reducing the risk of each of 3 crimes such as burglary, theft, and sexual assault.

Optimally, the writing task will be created on a computer and sent to the assessor electronically.

Description: Question and Answer a Speaker
Questions (5 items, 10 points possible)
Student will prepare a list of 5 questions (IL=4, IH-A=5) for a law enforcement officer or representative who will address issues such as self-defense, gang violence, and/or domestic abuse.

Answers (3 items, 6 points possible)
Student will take notes on the answers to students’ questions during the law enforcement presentation. After the presentation, assessor will ask 3 level-appropriate questions and student will write 3 responses based on issues addressed by the law enforcement officer or representative.

1. Address at least 3 types of crimes (such as burglary, theft and sexual assault)
2. Describe methods of reducing the risk of each crime, for individuals and communities.

Optimally, the writing task will be created on a computer and sent to the assessor electronically.
