General Information

All students can participate in EL Civics instruction and assessment. However, only ESL students in WIOA II EL Civics education programs can earn payment points for passing COAAP assessments. ABE, ASE, and CTE students can earn CAEP Immigrant Integration Indicator (I3) outcome for CAEP but not payment points for WIOA II. Task: 1

Description: Role-play Venipuncture Procedure

Content (8 items, 16 points possible)
In a simulated, clinical role-play where the assessor acts as a patient and the student acts as the phlebotomist, the student will demonstrate standard intake procedures for patient interaction before a venipuncture. The role-play will have up to 8 interactions (IH=6, A=8) such as:
• Greet the patient
• Verify full name
• Verify date of birth
• Verify fasting status
• Ask about allergies
• Ask about history of fainting or other problems during blood draws
• Request consent to proceed
• Give post-draw instructions

Presentation (2 items, 2 points possible)
Student will be rated on 1 effective non-verbal communication skill such as smiling, eye contact, body language, professionalism, or appearance, etc., AND
1 effective verbal communication skill such as tone of voice, speaking with clarity, or appropriate volume for patient confidentiality, etc.

Task: 2

Description: Write an Incident Log
Given a level-appropriate clinical scenario of an issue during a venipuncture procedure (e.g., patient identification error, adverse physical reaction, or needle stick injury, etc.), student will write an incident log. The log will include 3 elements, such as:
1. Incident details
2. Incident causes
3. Follow-up recommendations

Optimally, the writing task will be created digitally and sent to the assessor electronically.
